With Fashion Revolution Week in momentum, San Francisco Sustainable Fashion Week International (SFSFWI) is making a positive impact on the West Coast with a voice led by industry leaders, environmental activists, and conscious citizens to be heard across the world.
Established in 2013 by Sandra Hanns, Co-Founder of Earth Day San Francisco, SFSFWI was inspired by the global movement to encourage environmental and labor justice within the fashion industry. In partnership with Fashion Revolution, Sustainable Apparel Coalition, and Ethical Fashion Forum, 2019 marks the 6th Annual SF Sustainable Fashion Week International.
Yesterday, Ho‘omaluō had the opportunity to attend SFSFWI’s Film Premiere at the San Francisco Public Library. Four eco-fashion films were presented at the Koret Auditorium including the premiere of Remake’s latest film “Made in Mexico”, highlighting the hardships and oppression of the women who work in maquiladoras, or Mexico’s garment factories.
The films sponsored by San Francisco Green Film Festival were followed by a fashion show and a panel discussion about sustainability in fashion featuring Karen Topakian, Founder of Topakian Communications and Board Member of Greenpeace, Caro Collazos, Designer of Tangui, Sandra Hanns, Founder of SFSFWI, and Rachel Caplan, Founder of SF Green Film Festival.
“We have created the platform for sustainable artists to unite, as one community, expanding the awareness of healthy-fashion and eco-friendly apparel & products for people and the planet.” – SFSFWI
In reaction to the factory collapse of Rana Plaza that occurred on April 24, 2013, Fashion Revolution was founded in efforts to reform the fashion industry’s unethical practices from production sourcing to labor.
Today marks the 6 Year Anniversary of the incident that killed 1,138 people and injured over 2,000 workers. Fashion Revolution Week is a global movement that encourages the public to call for transparency and transformation within industry supply chains.
At Ho‘omaluō, we believe that Earth Day isn’t just limited to one day. It’s a daily intention, a lifestyle to ignite greater changes in the world. SF Sustainable Fashion Week International will continue in conjunction with Fashion Revolution Week 2019 from April 20 – April 27, 2019. To join the movement visit here for details of future events occurring this Thursday, April 25 and Saturday, April 27.
